The Cost Problem at Scale
ChatGPT API costs depend on model settings, token use, responses, and retries. Review these factors together for the workload.
The author uses SNR to discuss useful prompt content relative to noise. This description does not establish an observed waste percentage or an expected output result. Related: sinc-LLM research.
The Structured-Prompt Method
The article uses a signal-processing analogy to introduce six specification fields. Include the role, context, data, constraints, format, and task relevant to the request.
Scroll sideways to see all table columns.
| Band | What It Contains | Specification focus |
|---|---|---|
| PERSONA | Expert role definition | Role and expertise |
| CONTEXT | Relevant background only | Situation and environment |
| DATA | Specific inputs for this task | Inputs and sources |
| CONSTRAINTS | Rules, limits, exclusions | Rules and exclusions |
| FORMAT | Output structure specification | Output structure |
| TASK | The instruction | Objective |
Step-by-Step Implementation
Step 1: Audit Your Top Prompts
Find your 5 most expensive API calls by token count. For each one, ask: how many tokens actually help produce the output?
Step 2: Decompose into 6 Bands
For each prompt, extract content into the six fields and check whether any removed content is needed for the task.
Step 3: Invest in CONSTRAINTS
Write explicit constraints relevant to the task. Check compliance in the output rather than assuming the prompt prevents retries.
Step 4: Add FORMAT Specification
Specify the required output structure and inspect the response for adherence.
Step 5: Measure and Iterate
Check token usage, cost, and output quality before and after you make the change.
Measurements for a Workload Comparison
Record the following for a comparison of prompt versions:
- Baseline: input tokens, API costs, responses, and output quality checks for the declared workload.
- Enhanced mode: the same workload and checks, with the enhanced prompt preparation enabled.
- Progressive mode: the same workload and checks, with the progressive preparation enabled.
- Latency: scatter-step latency and complete workflow time.
- Output: factual checks, task completion, formatting, and retry reasons.
Review input tokens, responses, retries, and output length together. A prompt-format change alone does not establish a saving or a first-pass success rate.
